USCIS Introduces New I-131 Form: Effective Immediately – Key Information for Applicants

On October 11, 2024, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) introduced a new version of Form I-131 (06/17/24 edition). This version officially replaced the previous 04/01/24 edition. From now on, applicants must use the updated form to avoid rejection.

What is Form I-131?

USCIS offers Form I-131 for individuals who need to leave the U.S. for personal or professional reasons temporarily. It primarily serves individuals applying for permanent residency or U.S. citizenship.

When to Use Form I-131?

  • If you are a permanent resident, planning to stay outside the U.S. for an extended period, you should apply for a Re-entry Permit with Form I-131. The permit is valid for up to two years. It ensures that you maintain your permanent resident status while abroad without losing your residency due to a prolonged absence.
  • If you have not yet obtained U.S. citizenship or permanent residency and plan to travel abroad for an extended period, you can use Form I-131 to apply for Advance Parole. This document allows you to return to the U.S. after your trip without affecting your ongoing immigration application.
  • If you have asylum or refugee status and need to travel outside the U.S., Form I-131 helps you apply for a Refugee Travel Document. This document ensures that you maintain your status while traveling and can return to the U.S. without issues.

Updates to the I-131 Form

  • New Name and Expanded Scope: USCIS renamed the I-131 form to “Application for Travel Documents, Parole Documents, and Arrival/Departure Records.” The new name reflects a wider range of document types.
  • Effective Date: The new form became mandatory on October 11, 2024. USCIS no longer accepts the previous version.
  • Major Changes: The updated form is more detailed. It requires additional personal information and biometric details such as fingerprints and photographs.

To avoid delays or rejections, carefully review your form before submitting it. Ensure all information is accurate and complete.
